A Young Champion - Ramy Ashour |
|
|
By Passant Rabie
From Egypt Today
Quiet laughter, hushed chatter and the occasional ringing of a cell phone were the only sounds filling the VIP hall of Cairo International Airport on October 20, just after midnight. But just a few seconds later, Ramy Ashour stepped off his five-hour flight from the United Kingdom and turned the quiet terminal into a chaotic flurry of press, family and rowdy friends, all vying for a moment with the champion squash player. |

JEAN DELIERRE - A PASSION BECOMES A COMMITMENT TO HIS SPORT
Nov 25, 2003 Sometimes a person just has to take a step back and look at things from a different perspective. The problems facing professional squash are widely known and have been well documented. The interaction between players and referees, lack of financial resources, and failure to get squash included within the Olympic games have all been beaten to death by the media. Yet what are the results? |

The Squash Official (TSO)
October 2008 Edition
The Squash Official is now available ... and it will be our first-ever digital-only edition - the paper version having gone Paleolithic. (We want to make it clear that no animals were harmed in the preparation of this edition.) Technical difficulties explain the late release of this TSO - but it's worth the wait.

DAZZLING EGYPTIANS SHOW A NEW WAY TO PLAY THE GAME |
|
By Alan Thatcher
From www.squashplayer.co.uk
Commentating on the World Open Championships, Chris Robertson and I were agog at the way Ramy Ashour and Amr Shabana began their semi-final match.
Each one came out attacking straight from the off and the ball hardly got to the back of the court as a succession of drops and boasts ensued.
We were witnessing a very different way of playing the game. The usual rules of engagement were simply ignored. Instead of spending the opening phase of the match hitting the ball to the back corners, which is the norm in most PSA matches as players get a feel for both the ball and the court, these two amazing Egyptians simply went on the offensive, firing in dazzling winners at will. |

Squash champs Shabana and David's success formula |
|
|
By Jenny Coutinho
From www.merinews.com
To reach the top is one but to hold on to the peak tenaciously is quite another. The same goes for Squash. Egyptian Amr Shabana and Malaysian Nicol David have, therefore, been adopting different approaches to the game to keep themselves on the top.
Sustaining at the top is a Herculean task in any sport. Squash is no different. Current world number one Egyptian Amr Shabana in the men’s section and Malaysian Nicol David in the ladies have been adopting different approaches to the games to keep on the top perch. |

I have that one decision, dream and idea ... |

By Reyna Pacheco
9th Grade
Surf City Squash
Have you ever had one decision impact your entire life? Have you ever had the one dream that seems so very real upon waking in the morning? Have you ever felt that there was that one idea that sits at the center of your universe and one that you cannot let go of, regardless of what people might suggest?
I have that one decision, dream and idea all rolled into one!
I made a huge choice in the 7th grade. I decided I wanted my life to change. I decided I wanted to be able to work hard for something and to achieve it. I had always wanted to have a dream I would wake up to and work towards.

By Shawn Patton
Based on Commentary by Rod Love
From Globe and Mail
With apologies to Archimedes I had my own Eureka moment, not in the bath but rather at Starbucks the other day.
While enjoying my cup of java and a respite from clients and the trials and tribulations in stock and credit markets, I was reading an Opinion article by Rod Love in the Globe & Mail when my epithany or eureka moment hit.

Several years ago I fell hard for the game of squash. My husband, David, had been playing for a long time so I knew it involved a lot of sweating, a racquet, and the space-age looking glass courts near the fitness center, but I hadn't bothered to check it out.

By Alan Thatcher

Ramy Ashour and Nicol David crowned world champions in Manchester
Ramy Ashour overcame Egyptian rival Karim Darwish to claim his first World Open championship after Nicol David had beaten Vicky Botwright to retain her women's title and maintain her stranglehold on the female game.
For Botwright, it was a magnificent way to bow out of the world tour. She is now concentrating on a coaching career and was back on court at 9a.m. sharp today (Monday) to coach a group of local schoolchildren in Manchester. |
