ENCORE - A Year Round Approach to Racquet Sports E-mail
By Brent Johner

The next time somebody tells you that playing squash will ruin your tennis game, smile politely and ask them this question: "Do you play both games frequently?" I can guarantee you that their answer will be: "No."

Nobody who plays squash frequently in the winter and tennis frequently in the summer will ever say that one sport hurts the other because it just isn't true. Squash can make you a better tennis player and tennis can make you a better squash player.

Squash gives you fitness, strength and stamina. Tennis gives you technical awareness, patience and mental toughness. The balls are different, the courts are different and the strokes are very different. But the two sports have enough in common that anybody who commits to playing each sport in its season will surely the benefit.

The key word here is commitment. Players who want to play both sports successfully will need to invest in some instruction. A couple of hours of professional instruction at the start of tennis season will keep squash habits from creeping into your tennis swing -- and vice versa.

A couple of hours of instruction will also reinforce the many good habits that players and coaches want to cross over from one sport to the other, such as keeping your eye on the ball, getting your racquet back before the bounce and moving your feet into position before the ball enters the hitting zone.

Once you have played both sports successfully for a few seasons and once you have had enough instruction that you have become self-correcting, you will be able to dispense with lessons. At that point, you will be able to pick and choose specific clinics to help you with any problems that might arise.

Meanwhile, the benefits of having a racquet in your hand all year round will become clear to you fairly quickly. You will notice, for example, a higher level of fitness when tennis season begins. You will also see a marked improvement in your ability to volley and play at the net.

Agree with most of the article except how after a few years you can dispense with lessons. I'm just into my fifties and continue to take lessons to get back on track from bad habits or when my buddy starts beating me. lol
