Surf City Squash
Have you ever had one decision impact your entire life? Have you ever had the one dream that seems so very real upon waking in the morning? Have you ever felt that there was that one idea that sits at the center of your universe and one that you cannot let go of, regardless of what people might suggest?
I have that one decision, dream and idea all rolled into one!
I made a huge choice in the 7th grade. I decided I wanted my life to change. I decided I wanted to be able to work hard for something and to achieve it. I had always wanted to have a dream I would wake up to and work towards.
Surf City Squash, a non-profit organization has changed my entire universe. Surf City Squash continues to make an important difference as it has made me understand that nothing is impossible so long as I want it with my all my heart and am willing to work hard. Surf City Squash is an organization that helps students with their academics, community service, squash and from my perspective, life itself.
Since being accepted to the program and team, it has become a whole new and exciting world. Each day we go to practice, yet we also study really hard. In both activities we give 100%. All the time I have, every minute on court seems more precious to me than gold. I also spend my weekends with my team members or practicing all alone on court. Or perhaps I go to the internet and read more about the world of squash.
 I will not let go of squash. It is all that I dream of, think of and wake up for. I am only 14 years old and I do not live in the rich part of town. It is hard for me to get as much coaching as some other privileged kids ranked #2 or #3 in the nation. But once you want something with all your heart and are willing to sacrifice, everything changes. There’s no going back. My coaches and everyone that supports Surf City make a difference to each kid in the program, one way or the other. They believe in me and that makes me stronger and more certain of my goals.
So every time you feel like not getting up, or feel like the world’s a mess or don’t feel like doing much of anything, take a moment and really think of what is available out there. There is simply so much you might be missing. One person, one hello!, one minute, one moment, one decision just might make a difference. Surf City Squash absolutely makes a difference, each and every day. My advice is that we all find that one thing that makes you eager to live the next minute, that next hour, that next day.
Coming to play squash with the other Surf City Squash students or coming and being tutored allows us to see a different view of the world where kids who aren’t necessarily rich but work hard for what they want have a chance to succeed.
It makes you want to make a difference. It also makes you wake up and smile and expect something amazing might happen, because even spending only a few minutes on court makes a difference in the day.
