World Open FIRST WORD - Storm |

Scoring Storm Threatens to Cause Rift in Squash
By Alan Thatcher
The World Squash Federation is facing a backlash from players and organisations desperate to stop the introduction of PAR scoring to 11 in all competitions.
As the WSF gets ready to decide this week whether to adopt the new scoring system across the board, a highly vocal campaign of protest is making itself hard in Manchester and beyond.
Arguments are raging for and against the motion and will reach a crescendo this week whatever the result. (Squash360 coverage HERE & Squash Player coverage HERE).
Those promoting the new system want to introduce a unified scoring system at all levels of the game, which they believe might help our hopes of Olympic inclusion, although critics claim there is no evidence to support this claim.
Those keen to retain the traditional hand-in and hand-out system, where you score only when you are serving, argue that matches at club and junior level will be over too quickly. |

Squash Heals Lives
By Alan Thatcher
Contributing Editor
I am delighted to report that squash is one of the major activities in a new community sports club launched recently in Kent, UK.
The club is called TriSports and is aimed at helping disadvantaged young people in the community.
The organisation was certainly inspired by the urban squash programmes developing so successfully in the USA.
Our own version in the UK is aimed at young homeless and unemployed people. Our target is simple. We want them to get hooked on sport before they get hooked on any potentially harmful, unhealthy or anti-social habits. |

Malcolm Willstrop sees benefit in a PAR 11 Move |
|
By Malcolm Willstrop

Nothing has amazed me more in recent times than the reluctance of squash’s official bodies to adopt PAR to 11 scoring universally. That the last European Team Championships were played on a high tin with traditional scoring beggars belief. |
