A fan of our blog sent us an issue of a Squash magazine from 1982 that is absolutely priceless. (Thanks Neill!)
It's a genuine slice of our sport and one that, once you stop giggling, makes you realize how much our sport has grown up. Or has it? |

How the Best of the Best Get Better and Better |
By Graham Jones
Originally From Harvard Business Review
Compete only with yourself, demand relentless feedback, and don’t forget to celebrate, says this sports psychologist and executive coach.
Until 1954, most people believed that a human being was incapable of running a mile in less than four minutes. But that very year, English miler Roger Bannister proved them wrong.
“Doctors and scientists said that breaking the four-minute mile was impossible, that one would die in the attempt,” Bannister is reported to have said afterward. “Thus, when I got up from the track after collapsing at the finish line, I figured I was dead.” Which goes to show that in sports, as in business, the main obstacle to achieving “the impossible” may be a self-limiting mind-set. |

SQUASH FLASHBACK - Time Out For Tension |
|
By Laurence Shames
The New York Times
First Published September 20, 1987
THE SCORE IS 11-ALL IN THE FIFTH and deciding game of a gritty, hard-fought match of squash racquets we are playing on the sixth floor of that Wall Streeters' mecca, the Downtown Athletic Club. George L. Ball, 48, chairman and chief executive officer of Prudential-Bache Securities, looks pressed but not tired. His reddish hair is moist and gathered into clumps; a wedge of sweat traces out his backbone. But his breathing is even and he still comes up on his toes to receive the serve. |

Squash: It's a ball and an intense aerobic workout |
|
By Jennifer Rundell
From www.beepcentral.com
When you hear the word squash what do you immediately think of? The yellow vegetable that you did not like as a kid, but find somewhat appetizing now or do you think of squashing a bug that you see crawling across your kitchen floor? Well squashing a bug is closer to the game of squash than the vegetable is. In this game, however, there is no bug being squashed, but rather a soft ball the size of a golf ball. |

Riding Elephants on Road To Copenhagen |
|
By James Poole
If I had a pound for every time I’ve heard someone say ‘Squash deserves to be in the Olympics’, then I would be a rich man.
My opinion is that squash does not ‘deserve’ to be in the Olympics. Being an Olympic sport is a privilege, not a right; and acceptance into the Olympic family only comes if you put the work in, build the relationships and annoy as few people as possible along the way.
If we look back to 2005, to the IOC session in Singapore – Squash was never realistically going to get into the 2012 games. The effort was there emotionally in the form of the great Jahangir Khan, but was executed poorly in the form of a promotional video straight out of the 90’s and a PowerPoint that would make a child cringe. |

Beijing Experience Boosts Jahangir Khan's Hopes For Squash In 2016 Games |
WSF Release
By Howard Harding
Attendance at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing has boosted World Squash Federation President Jahangir Khan's hopes that Squash can make its long-awaited debut in the Games in 2016.
Squash is one of seven sports short-listed by the IOC for possible addition to the 2016 Games programme - the decision for which will be made at the IOC session in Copenhagen in October 2009.
Joined in Beijing by WSF Patron HRH Tunku Imran, the President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia and an IOC Member, and WSF Emeritus President Susie Simcock, who recently received the New Zealand Olympic Order award after more than a decade of service with the NZ Olympic Committee, Khan was able to meet and receive feedback and helpful advice from many IOC members present. |
