The University of Western Ontario vie for a 25th Consecutive Men's OUA Title E-mail

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The University of Western Ontario Mustangs vie for a 25th straight men's title on Saturday at the Ontario Universities (OUA) squash championships hosted by Brock University and held at the White Oaks Club.


The London, Ontario, Canada school heads into the championships as the number-one seed. The Mustangs are led by all stars Chris Hanebury of Ajax, Ont., Iain Crozier of Winnipeg and Greg Hutner of Toronto. It's also a special day for Mustangs head coach Jack Fairs in his 60th year at the school.

The Mustangs open against fourth-seed Toronto Varsity Blues in the semifinal. The Blues are led by fourth-year David Yik of Calgary.

The other semifinal match-up features the No.2 McGill Redmen and No.3 Queen's Golden Gaels. The Redmen are led by rookie Nick James of North Vancouver. The Golden Gaels look to a rookie Alex Ford of London and sophomore Paul Gartenburg of Toronto.

The Mustangs are also number-one on the women's side and are two-time defending champions. Western is led by Player of the Year Stephanie Edmison of Toronto undefeated this season and Laura Savage of Calgary. The Mustangs face No.4 Queen's Golden Gaels in the first semifinal.

The No.2 seeded McGill team face No.3 Toronto Varsity Blues in the other semifinal match-up. The Varsity Blues are led by Karlene Headley-Cooper of Mississauga.

The men's and women's semis go at 9 a.m. The winners battle for gold and the losers for bronze. The medal matches run from 2-5 p.m., later on Saturday.

The top teams here head to the 2008 Canadian University and College Squash Championships March 7-9 at the University of Toronto. The CIS nationals are also a selection criteria for the Canadian team for the 2008 World University Squash Championships in Cairo.
