Getting to Know ... RayV

So who is Ray?  Or more accurately RayV the technology provider enabling the Web Broadcasts from the McWil Players Cup Championships in Boston?  Squash360.com made some calls, asked some questions and here is what we learned:

What is RayV?
RayV is an Internet TV operating system that enables broadcasting live TV via the internet to an unlimited number of concurrent viewers at zero distribution cost.

Put simply, RayV has developed the underlying technology for the next generation of Global TV Networks.RayV enables existing broadcasters to expand their channel offerings and engage new territories, and also opens the broadcast world to independent newcomers. The RayV network will include innovative channels, shows and live events from around the world.
RayV's founding team is a unique blend of seasoned entrepreneurs and technology innovators, some of whom are considered the inventors of the internet phone and pioneers of the VoIP industry. RayV is a US based company, with offices in Los Angeles, New York, London and Tel Aviv.

Facebook investor Accel Partners, an active Venture Capital fund recently provided $8 million dollars of second round financing to the firm.  Accel has more than $4B under management worldwide.

What is the RayV Technology?
Here is what we can report (at least what we can tell you without signing non-disclosure documents or renaming my first born son Ray):  R
ayV broadcasts live via a fully distributed architecture without the use of centralized streaming servers.

This is made possible by a generic grid network formed by RayV's proprietary internet protocols.  The revolutionary effect of the technology lies in its ability to substantially reduce the cost of live TV broadcasting.

By leaving the technology open, scalable and flexible, RayV intends to foster a community of broadcasters and audiences, and a better market place for TV enthusiasts, creating the next Generation of TV.

What happened during the Squash web broadcast?
In trying to capture the images and deliver a true HD broadcast Jean is pushing the envelope, placing demands on computer hardware and pushing the limits of the RayV platform.   To put it in another way, its kind of like putting a Ferrari motor into a BMW chasis.  He is pioneering and quite honestly going beyond RayV's reliability testing to date despite successful testing during the Toronto Pace Canadian Squash Classic.

RayV is working with Jean and his team to understand the causes that contributed to the issues during the squash webcast.  Together they are exploring a number of potential contributing factors including bandwith reliability/capability of venue, overtaxed computer hardware, hardware malfunction and/or something as simple as hardware overheating.  RayV has close to 200 channels from over a dozen countries running live, 24-7 without any issues.
