Ramy Ashour vs. Karim Darwish
By ZeeShaan Jamal
The Egyptian domination of the international squash scene has never been more prominent and underscored than it was in this tournament.
At first it was Shabana vs. El Shorbagy (the reigning world junior champion) in round three. Then it was Shabana vs. El Hindi in the quarter-final. To top that we had Shabana vs. Ashour in the semi-final and just to drive the point home, we had Ashour vs. Darwish in the Final of the World Open of 2008. |

Malcolm Willstrop sees benefit in a PAR 11 Move |
|
|
By Malcolm Willstrop

Nothing has amazed me more in recent times than the reluctance of squash’s official bodies to adopt PAR to 11 scoring universally. That the last European Team Championships were played on a high tin with traditional scoring beggars belief. |

Irish Give Fitting Testimonial to Derek Ryan |
|
By Lindie Naughton Squash PR Irish squash fans enjoyed a rare treat when world No 2 Greg Gaultier from France arrived in Dublin to play at Derek Ryan's testimonial night in Fitzwilliam LTC on Friday 19 September. Gaultier proved a more than adequate substitute for English #1 James Willstop who was forced to pull out injured. It ensured that Ryan, one of Ireland's most successful sportsmen and a true gentleman, was given a memorable 'send off' by fans, family and friends. Ryan, the former World #7 and Irish #1, has been concentrating on his job as a physiotherapist since retiring from the pro game in 2002, but he had continued playing league squash and had put in a few months of extra practise. |

Celebrating Derek Ryan - The Most Capped Squash Player In The World |
|
By Lindie Naughton
Squash PR
Derek Ryan, who made it as high as No 7 on the squash world rankings has a unique distinction in Irish sport - the 168 Irish caps he has accumulated is by some way a world record.
"When I started playing, David Gotto from Belfast held the world record of 122 caps. He was still on the Irish team when I made it at 17 or 18, so I was aware of his record."
Ryan had begun playing squash in the 1980s at a time when the sport was going through a boom period, with Irish player Jonah Barrington ensuring the sport had a high profile in this country. Ryan's parents Bernard and Bernadette played, and so the young Derek and his brother Noel joined them.
"We lived in Killiney and when it came to playing, we were spoiled for choice - there were courts in Fitzpatricks Castle hotel, I n the Sandycove club just down the road, in Squash Ireland at Dalkey and in the Killiney court hotel, though I never played there," says Ryan. |
