Although the squash enthusiasts of the Alexandria Sporting Club had lost their big hope when Engy Kheirallah was on the wrong end of an upset in the quarter finals, it was not held against Raneem El Weleily that she had moved to Cairo to study. So it was standing room only when the fourth seed took on world champion Rachael Grinham.


Their styles gel and the Egyptian tends to play well against the 'half Egyptian'. And when El Weleily raced into a six one lead in the first against a the unsettled Cairo resident of some seven years it looked like she would again do so. But she could only muster one more point as Grinham ducked and dived with more patience to take the first. Mistakes from the prodigiously talented but inconsistent Egyptian were awaited, and enough materialised for the second game to be secured too.

Pierrepont Takes Vancouver Prize

ngland's Suzie Pierrepont overpowered compatriot Alexandra Norman in the final of the Women's Sun & Surf Open to win the $8,000 WISPA World Tour squash event at the Jericho Tennis Club in Vancouver, Canada.

N
orman, a qualifier from Nottingham - but now based in Montreal - reached the final after three successive upsets over seeded opponents. But Pierrepont, the 23-year-old event favourite from Sussex, was too strong for her fellow country woman in the final, beating Norman 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 in 30 minutes to celebrate the third Tour title of her career.

A month after completing her second full year as world number one, Malaysia's Nicol David now marks her 25th successive month at the top of the August Women's World Squash Rankings - thereby overtaking Australia's Sarah Fitz-Gerald to establish the third-longest unbroken run in the history of the Women's International Squash Players' Association (WISPA) rankings.

The $53,500 CIMB Malaysian Open is making squash history today as the first women's Tour event to use point-a-rally scoring.

The WISPA World Tour Gold championship introduces the first change in scoring from the traditional 'hand-in-hand-out' system - in which a player can only win a point when serving - which has been used since the Women's International Squash Players' Association was formed in 1984.
