Ask the Expert ... Officiating PDF Print E-mail
Q & A

If there is sufficient interest, participation and a spirit of open and respectful dialogue, we would like to make this an ongoing feature on Squash360.

Every week or so (during the squash season) we will:
  - post a a new Officiating/Rules question or scenario
  - invite your opinions, comments and discussion
  - after the Armchair Officials have had their say, we will Ask the Expert(s) for their ruling and comments and post them on-line (so far we have the generous participation of Barry Faguy, Rod Symington, Jos Aarts and Graham Waters in answering your questions)

So here we go, the first question for you the squash audience:

PREMATURE EXCLAMATION   Assuming the striker was about to stop and ask for a let, the Referee quickly says stroke for what was a routine stroke. However, the player says he wasn't asking and intended to continue - but of course, play has now stopped. Other than the obvious advice to always be certain that the player is indeed asking, what should the Referee do?

Advice for my anatomic weird condition
written by Edgar , June 06, 2008
Hi, my issue is my terrible back-drive, but I feel is because this fact:
I'm right-handed but believed or not I'm not same with my leg (for example in soccer I use my left leg).

Any advise to eliminate my disadvantage to coordinate my right leg when I shot the ball?

Thanks

Since this situation is a clear Stroke situation, the referee has inherent powers to award a stroke in the interests of player safety, even in the absence of a let request. So, the correct course for the referee is to stick to his stroke award, but at the same time caution the striker for dangerous play, as by his own admission, he would have played a shot that could have injured his opponent. If the striker does not heed the warning, the next time a similar situation happens, the ref should award a Conduct stroke against the player [Rule 17 violation]
