Squash Eastern
New Zealand
Analyses in various countries worldwide has shown there are four main categories of squash players:
Squash Fanatic - who loves the game more than anything. They make up a total of 3% of all players.
Squash Enthusiast - who play approximately three times per month. They love Squash but their major motivation is staying fit and feeling good. This group is approximately 17% of all squash players.
Leisure Player - who play on an average of once or twice a month. This group is approximate 30% of all players.
Occasional Player - who play Squash at an average of once every two-month. They make up 50% of all players
While the analysis goes into a little more depth than this note . . . the ‘long and the short of it’ indicates that in most instances Squash caters for the 20% of people already ‘sold on the game’ (the fanatic and the enthusiasts) - whose main concern is getting their favourite court time and having good squash courts.
In a world where our sport increasingly competes with all leisure activities (not just other sports) the needs of the biggest volume of future Squash club members (the 80% of leisure and occasional players) is very different…to them things like convenience (easy access to clubs and courts), individual service, feeling part of the club, having other leisure activities available and the club environment (lounges, state of the changing facilities, availability of good food, other sport/activity options etc) are significant issues.
Those clubs (no matter what sport) that take the time and make the effort to meet the needs of 80% of Squash players will survive and flourish…will your club be amongst that number.
