In association with major sponsors New Zealand Community Trust and Prince, clubs around New Zealand opened their doors for two and a half hours this past Saturday and Sunday afternoon, from 2:30-5pm.
The public were welcomed with open arms for a free hit at participating clubs, with racquets and balls supplied.
As part of the campaign, Squash New Zealand CEO Mike Thompson said it's a wonderful opportunity for New Zealanders to try their hand at the world's healthiest sport. "It is a tremendous game, and I am confident many of those who pick up a racquet this weekend will be hooked". Mike Thompson says with today's ever increasing demand for healthier lifestyles, squash is a superb option for New Zealanders with a half hour match offering a complete physical workout.
But he says there is also more to squash than just the physical side. "It is also a lot of fun and there is a great social atmosphere within the sport which keeps players coming back year after year."
The initiative began last year with Squash Wellington – with amazing results.
Squash NZ decided to take up the initiative this year, with the primary goals being to get clubs focused on a membership drive at the beginning of Winter, the Clean Up & Presentation of their facilities and to have a look at what programmes they offer a prospective Member.
198 clubs of 214 affiliated clubs throughout NZ have taken up the challenge. They got 2 sponsors, Prince and New Zealand Community Trust, and between them all advertising material was paid for – so apart from having the flyers delivered, either through the letter box channel, or their members, the initiative is free to clubs (plus their time to open the doors for 2 ½ hours each day, Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th of April).
Each club has between 3,000 and 24,000 flyers, 30 posters and 6 corflute signs, which they must distribute themselves. An 0800 number has been set up to direct potential players to their nearest participating club for National Squash Weekend. The number is 0800 SQUASH (0800 778 274).
Squash360 gratefully acknowledges the feedback and responsiveness of Squash NZ,
with special thanks to Mike Thompson & Donna Wilson.
